This First Nations K4-12 School is located on a remote Manitoba site whose only access is by winter road. Phase 1 of the project was made up of: a 17,600 SF addition; a major renovation to the existing 6,400 SF building and two new teacherages.
A participatory, consensus-based process along with stories from a community elder were utilized by the designers and the Building Committee (made up of the band council, school administration and community representatives) to develop the over-all design concept.
The spatial volume and the abundant natural light and strong visual connections to the exterior reflect the expansiveness of the prairie.
